Port Jervis formed a sister city relationship with Lapio, Italy in 2023.  Lapio is a town and commune in the province of Avellino and is about an hours drive east of Naples.  Lapio has a population of about 1,600 people.  Lapio is located in the Apennine Mountains and the region around it is known for its wine, olive oil, honey and hazelnut and chestnut production.  Lapio is famous for its culture, art, religious traditions, for the Wine Festival and Castle Filangieri.

Lapio and Port Jervis formalized their relationship through their local governments in September of 2023.  Although there was a booth introducing Lapio at the Italian Festival in August of that year, the first official event celebrating the new relationship is the Art Exchange, scheduled for Saturday June 15th, 2024!

The Port Jervis-Lapio Art Exchange is meant to showcase works from artists and poets in the two communities and foster a deeper relationship and encourage future cultural exchanges between the communication.  About a dozen artists from the two communities will be donating paintings to their sister city.  The paintings will be shown at an opening reception at UpFront Gallery in Port Jervis and Castle Filangieri in Lapio on June 15th.  We will be live streaming the reception with our counterparts in Lapio at that time.  A poet from Lapio and a poet from Port Jervis will also read a short poem during the reception.  The free event is open to the public and will start at 1:00 PM on Saturday June 15th at UpFront Gallery 31 Jersey Ave in Port Jervis.
